Michael Kalawe

Meet Michael, 34. For the past three years he's worked together with WaterAid to bring clean water and safe sanitation to rural communities across the Salima district of Malawi. It's Michael's job to ensure the work funded by WaterAid supporters makes the biggest impact on people's lives. Michael is one of our field bloggers, telling the story of how people's lives are changing, direct from the field.

Michael has a passion for helping the rural communities of Malawi. Drawing on his own experiences of village life from when he was a child, Michael understands the challenges that a lack of access to clean water bring.

“During the holidays I would go to stay with my grandparents in the village. There was such a little supply of clean water that we had to bath in river and wash our clothes there.”

From the moment Michael completed his studies he knew he wanted to focus his efforts on tackling the problem of inadequate access to water and sanitation, and that’s what he’s done.

“I am a Malawian, I want to help Malawians. At home I draw water from a tap. This should not be the right of a few, but the right of all.”

Follow Michael this summer and see how his work transforms lives.
